Our last two posts have discussed steps one and two in our three step plan to a successful personal leadership development plan. Step one discussed finding your passion and reason to become a leader in your environment. Step two then discussed how to obtain the knowledge and steps necessary for your leadership plan. Now with this post we have finally reached the most exciting step which involves incorporating the steps into your life.

Is it easy to incorporate leadership knowledge into everyday life?

It sounds easier than it actually is to incorporate the knowledge you have obtained for your personal leadership development plan through ways such as reading books and participating in forums into your everyday life. Just think of how many times you have previously said to yourself “I’m so excited, I can’t wait to make this happen”, and your excitement has all fizzled about by a few weeks later.

Despite all the intent you had, quickly life seems to happen and you “don’t have enough time” to make the changes needed. So the question arises “how do I make long lasting change to successfully implement my leadership development plan?”

Incorporating your leadership development plan:

The good news is that you can make change! Effective change takes place after repeating an action everyday for at least a month. The book we mentioned in step two of your leadership development plan, Think and Grow Rich, discusses how to make a strong affirmation for achieving your goals. If you read this everyday morning when you get out of bed, and every night before you go to sleep, after a month of doing this you will have formed a habit. After the 30 days of forcing yourself to read the affirmation, you will just do it because its now a part of you! Not only will you have formed a habit, you will have set up a method to have a successful mindset everyday of your life.  As mentioned in Step Two, you can grab a free physical copy of Think and Grow Rich from Stuart Zadels website, or alternatively you can grab an audio copy by clicking the image on the side, so you can listen in your car!

Here are a few other steps which can be used in conjunction with the acquisition of knowledge steps discussed in the previous post:

• The books you read which suggest small steps for success, make sure you follow them. The key to this is starting small. Do not start with “Im going to be a leader”. This is too overwhelming and is not a solid step for change. However through steps such as the above, introducing small steps such as a regular affirmation, you can set yourself up for long lasting change.

• The online forums you joined need regular participation. As discussed, this needs to happen everyday for the step to be successful. Therefore assigning some time each day (as little as 5-10 minutes) to go online and write and read in the forum can help you stay on track with your goals, and possibily incorporate other steps which are working for others. The recommended time of 5 minutes, is not a lot of time each day! Your leadership development plan does not require 3 or 4 hours of your time, just those small steps!

• Finally we suggested surround yourself with like minded people. In conjunction with online forums, you could start a group which meets regularly to discuss goals and success. You could do this in your workplace if you wish, 10 minutes in your lunch break each day could work! You can combine this with meeting with others who aren’t in your work circle on a weekly basis to discuss all your efforts!

Whilst it does take some effort on your behalf, it is comforting to know that long lasting success of your leadership development plan can occur from as little as one months worth of effort. Combine multiple methods of success such as incorporating knowledge from books, participating in forums and forming groups for success to ensure that you stay on the leadership development plan path. By doing this, and allowing yourself a month, you will be effortlessly on the way to dominating your field and becoming the leader you have always wanted to be!

The important thing to realise is that personal leadership development is never finished. You can always continue to grow and develop yourself in life. This means that these steps will ensure that you can continue to develop yourself throughout your entire life. Here are some steps you can take to obtain the knowledge necessary to your leadership development plan:

• Read books that help your growth and develop traits necessary to becoming a leader. A great example of such a book is Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, which has a detailed formula of how to obtain the goals you want. This has been rewritten to fit with modern society by Stuart Zadel and you can obtain a free copy of this from his website.

• Join online forums. If you google “leadership forum” you can find a list of forums to join which are free. Forums are a great place to meet other people that are interested in the same things you are. A lot of leadership forums offer great tips on developing yourself as a leader and enable you to see strategies which have worked and not worked for other people. You might find aspects you wish to include in your own leadership development plan.

• Surround yourself with like minded people. The online forums is a great start to this, however it is important to ensure you further surround yourself with people that have similar morals and values to yourself. If you have a partner (life or business) you should talk to your partner about where you want to head and the activities you would like to participate in. It is important to the success of your leadership development plan to have the people in your life support you, and possibly also partake in activities with you.

A leadership development plan can be broken down into three different steps which are as follows:

• Step One – Identifying your motivation to become a leader
• Step Two – Obtaining the steps and knowledge.
• Step Three – Incorporating step two into your life.

These three steps are instrumental in becoming a leader in your environment, and will therefore be covered in three different posts (one post for each step).  This ensures the information provided necessary for your leadership development plan is not rushed, but is instead covered in detail and can be easily applied to individuals in all field.  These steps are the same for all environments from youth to the corporate world.

Identifying your motivation to become a leader

Motivation is the most important part to any leadership development plan. Some people might laugh at the idea of motivation, knowing that procrastination often overcomes what you were meant to achieve for the day. However this is not the case. You will find that if you are procrastinating on something, it is because you have no real desire or motivation for the task at hand.

For you to be successful in becoming a leader and achieving your goal, you need to really want the goal. For example: imagine a lady named Jane working as a secretary. Sometimes it crosses into Jane’s mind that it would be nice to get a promotion to Organisation Manager. However, Jane is also content just keeping life how it is.

The attitude that Jane has is not enough to get her the goal. Instead now consider Paula, who is a secretary in a different department of the business, who also dreams of becoming the Organisation Manager. Paula is different from Jane though, as Paula thinks about her goal when she wakes up, on her way to work, while she is conducting her existing work, on her way home from work and in the evening at home. The attitude Paula holds is a burning desire and true motivation for the position of Organisation Manager.

Why is motivation the key to a leadership development plan?

Motivation is essential to becoming a leader, as when you have a burning desire for something it affects all your thoughts and therefore your actions. Someone like ‘Paula’ is thinking about her goal all the time, and will therefore subconsciously seek ways to achieve the goal, as well as recognizing opportunities that arise around her to obtain her dream. This may include performing more for her boss throughout the day, seeking extra clients, writing a report in a more professional manner or researching what else she can be doing to improve her professional persona.

Opposing this, someone with the mindset of Jane, would improve her performance temporarily while thinking of her goal, but quickly slip into under performing when the motivation has left her train of thought. Therefore it is evident that you have motivation to achieve your goal, as this provides a solid foundation for the rest of your leadership development plan.

How do I find out what my motivation is?

An easy and practical method to find what goal you are truly motivated for, is to go home and sit in a quiet place. Write down as many goals and dreams you can possibly think of, and remember this does not need to be a rushed exercise. When you are done, read through the list once more. After you have done this you should discard the list. Once you have walked away from the list, assess which goals are most present in your mind? In twenty fours time, ask yourself the same question. After this time, you will no doubt have a goal that has lingered solely in your mind for this period. This is your goal for which you have strong motivation.

• Connect with the spiritual side of yourself. You are living in a world larger than you are, so take a bit of time out during the day to meditate, or spend some time with nature.
